Mortal Gods - Two fights in an evening

"Reports are we have had a traitor in our midst, and he's legged it over to the Spartans" Leandros looked at his assembled troops, Tychon looked at his archers, "Got plenty of arrows lads, we are going to be busy."
Polykratos looked over the ruins, "Very odd ruins today, is the style Persian or something?"
Tycho leaned forwards to the slingers, extra bullets made up? Peltasts with loads of javelins."
The hoplites with the forces nudged ded each other and muttered, about the shooty types getting all teh glory, "You guys will be definitely busy," Leandros looked at the heavies, "there's lots of hoplites to beat up."
"By the way," Polykratos looked at Jeff the mousikos, "they say the Spartans think you betrayed them to us."
"They just didn't like my new song list, man!"
"What, the one you called 'Hey, Sparta, you suck!"

David and I met up for an evening of Mortal Gods fun, My list, and David's was our usual combinations, and we rolled up 'Hunt the Traitor." as our first mission. As I was on foot, I couldn't bring my usual pile of terrain, so we nicked some of Michael's lovely Sci-Fi stuff (bit Imperial, but it will do).  You will notice a couple of figures look worse for wear, that's because, unfortunately, one of my work colleagues bumped and dropped my box. A happy evening was spent listening to music and repairing figures over the weekend (honestly, these things happen, so no need to get upset. Wow! If my teenage self could hear me now).

We deployed on the chevrons (Mortal Gods has a lovely random deployment system), Leandros and my Hoplites were central. Polykratos and the peltasts left. Jeff, way back in reserve, slingers helping., Tychon and archers out right in the ruins. David's traitor was in his peltasts, tucked away nicely behind the shieldwall of hoplites.

Polykratos swung left through the ruins and attempted to charge the Spartan skirmishers that David had out on teh flank, only to tripp over his sandel straps (roll a 1 always is a failed charge)!

Second activation sees him get safely through the ruins and into the javelin armed helots.

They really did not like that!

He cut two down in one go, and David's force universally failed their morale tests. Suddenly, the flank was very, very empty, and the peltasts containing the traitor were suddenly at the front! It was like the rest of the warband has pushed him forwards to get rid of him!

My hoplites came forwards, forming shieldwall as they did. Javelins and archers ping away at the Spartans.

The hoplites have the traitorous peltasts in their sights, and order the charge!
Their turn to roll 1!

There goes that plan.

Slingers spot the Spartan peltasts and unleash a hail of shot, knocking out two.

Polykratos launched in towards the traitorous peltast, but the Spartan Lochagos intercepted, and missed.

Leaving Polykratos clear to off the offending peltast.

Well, he would have done, if Tychon had not got the shot in first!

"Oi, Tychon, that was my kill!" Polykratos laughed.

"You snooze, you lose!"

As the sunset over Leighton Buzzard, we reset the table and rolled a different scenario...

"They have it, we have some, we want more?"

"Basically, but without them getting ours!"

"Hmm.. technical."

This time, four objectives were set around the table (mine wer Grummio and Spartacus, David's were not safe for work), each turn you held one (or were the last player to control one), you score points. Control means outnumbering your opponent within 3" of an objective.

. Tychon, Polykratos, the slingers and archers were out left, Leandros and the hoplites were on the right, and Jeff and the peltasts in the centre, guarding Spartacus. David just massed his centrally so he could react. his first objective in teh rear right-hand ruin held by two batches of helots and a unit of veteran hoplites, while his other mass right to try to take Grummio.

My archers, guided by Tychon, unleash hell on David's hoplites! Three suddenly becomes a very, very lonely one!

While Polykratos, fire filling his blood, smashes and pushes back the helots, leaving the hoplite suddenly standing all on his own, while my 2-i-C puts in a claim on the slave in the ruins.

In the centre, my peltasts wonder what they have done to upset Polykratos as David's big lochagos and his peltasts charges towards them. Even Jeff playing jaunty tunes would not be much help! Thankfully, Polykratos decided to swing by and check in, rather than staying out right with the hoplites.

David's peltasts launch into my boss, causing him wounds. How rude!

But they don't stick around long as Polykratos chases them away and the punishing of David's Lochagos begins, doing four wounds! He recovered, but with a chest wound (so only has one wound).

Not to be outdone, Tychon launches a barrage of hits onto David's hoplites, forcing them back from the safety of their pillar.

Cut down in his prime, David's lochagi will be coming home on his shield.

Trying to block Polykratos from securing the slave, David's helot peltasts charge in, but are slaughtered in a turn by the superior dice throwing (honestly, it was one of those games where he could not miss). ^ wounds, that is really spectacular. (1/216 spectacular).

After seeing this, the Spartan hoplite decided that sticking around was continuing on teh path to suicide, and legged it to safety, removing his presence from the objective. Polykrtos moves to protect the Spartan slave (and hopefully liberate her)

A hoplite stand of David's tries to deal with Leandrios, but also comes off worse against him. My heroes ore on fire tonight!

David had had enough of Tychon though, and launched an experienced hoplite unit into him to shut him up!

While Leandros continued to grind through the other Greek hoplite units.

David's centre was suddenly rather absent!

It was a six turn game, but by the end of turn 5. I was 10:5 ahead. One more turn would not have changed this, so we called it there.

You know, you just can't have a bad game with these rules, David already wants a rematch!

Tychon lay on the ground, groaning as Polykratos and Leadndros both shook their heads at him, grinning, as he slowly came round.

"Now you know how we usually feel after one of these fights!" The usually grumpy Leandros laughed at him, offering a hand up.

Soldiers of Napoleon - Imperial Guard vs Austrians.

Mark and I met up for a game at Leighton Buzzard Wargames Club. My Imperial Guard vs his Austrians, but he had taken an earlier list (1806), whereas mine was back to 1811. This time saw the first fielding of my new Young Guard. My plan was to adance the guard through the two villages, one brigade had deployed forwards in the centre to accomplish this; then swing in from the left with the Gauard Heay Cavalry brigade. Unfortunately, Mark had other ideas! He had deployed with his cavalry brigade screening forwards. Then it all really went his way. Soldiers of Napoleon has three things you can do on each card, an amount of units that can move, a rally state and special events. Sometimes, the cards fall absolutely how you want them to, sometimes, they don't. Turn one and Mark had been dealt two sets of 'At the quick' special event cards, allowing a march and then a manouver (or vice versa) for three units. Exactly the amount of cavalry units in his brigade! Combined with a ...
