Three Mortiem et Gloriam Games at RayFest 2 - 8th August 2020 - Game 3

.Again, only half a games worth of photos, as the heat got to us all during the day, sorry!

In the baking heat of the desert of South Cheam, six intrepid generals gathered in a socially distant and cooperative manner in Ray's garden, under the shelter of gazebos, to play MeG while sharing nothing but good humour, heatstroke, three decks of cards (wiped down between games) and hand sanitiser.

All the rounds were based on delayed/postponed or defunct competitions from our time in lockdown.
Round 1: Far East: Gupta Indian vs Senguko Samurai - Rollcall Theme - Richard
Round 2: Classical: Thracian Lowland Tribes vs Sassanid Persians - Attack Theme - Ray
Round 3: Egyptian: Early Fatamid Egyptians vs Saitic Egyptians - Campaign Theme - Nik

This was a three round event, each round with a different theme and requirement. Looking at the draw, I had Richard, Ray and Nik, all of whom I have never bested in combat, so my hopes of an out-right win were slim, but I knew I could have a lot of fun!

Round 3 vs Nik and his Early Fatamid Egyptians,
My list

At least 1000 years between us, not real Egyptians in the opinion of my army. My army is my army of the Dead, risen again to reclaim the Valley of the Nile in the scortching heat of Cheam...

The terrain, an Egyptian village near the Nile, three areas of rocky ground and a wood, as the sun sets low towards the land of the dead.

My Greek spears line up. 80% outscouted, this is going to be tough.

The Egyptian contingent, guarding their Stargate

My cahriots and light horse deploy out left, and Nick's long spear cavalry and mass of (significantly better) infantry is coming in on my right.

Initial moves, my chariots attempts to plug the gap on Nik. My spears move quickly to try to seal off Nik's cavalry.Nik is an excellent general, this was going to be hard.

Even sending horse through rocky ground, knowing my chariots can't come into chase. His bows and two cavalry units goading my Pharoah.

My spears sqaure (or hypotinuse) up to Nik's cavalry, while I try and work out how to beat a mass of better foot.

Nik's view of the world, he's such a good painter and nice bloke too.

It's a good line, and maybe I can barndoor it across to seal Nik off.

First clashes, hit cavalry, my top unit had been hit by arcehrs (so much for shieldcover).

Nik's line smashes in, some of mine charged, but most were Nik charging me (which aliviated the integral shooters bonus Nik also had). My 18 bases vs 24, outclassed too. Squeak!

Looks like Nik might try to get a flank on my spears here too. My skilled bows duck back into the wood for safety.

Playing tag with Nik's cavalry, my chariots and spears push back. Nik's cavalry also pulls back from the threat of my spears )not ure he sees them as a threat mind).

In fact, my chariots catch  Nik's skirmishers, I got a point! (1-0)

Beautiful shadows cast across the battlefield. No other reason for this photo apart from how good it looks.

Nik's Dalyami smash through my spears and into my unprotected, combat shy, bows behind. That's not going to be good. (1-2)

My superiors might stand a chance against the hordem and they are dealing out some damage.

But alas and alack, it was it was not to be. My bows broke, my Egyptian spears broke, and my Annubis warriors, I did mangae to pick up one of Nik's Spear units, but it was too little and too late, his cavalry out danced me, he was into my camp with his Daylami and he was about to break my skilled bows with a flank charge from his spears as the day was done, I conceeded again to Nik. (3-15)

Thankfully, my earlier win had held me off the bottom slot, and I was joint fourth (out of 6th), and poor RIchard ended up with three losses and the wooden spoon.

A gentleman smiles through adversity.

Blizkeig Commander IV - Hasty Assault

Mark and Stephen took my British at 1750 points, with effectively the same lists as before, but with two turns of preprogrammed artillery and a turn of smoke to assault my 1100 points of Germans who were in dugouts and gunpits. I chose to defend the four hills near my baseline. I has three HMGs, three mortars, two command teams and six infantry platoons, with two PAK36s teams. PAK36s and mortars on the back hill, two infantry and an HMG on the front. Infantry and Mortars in the left hill as a flank guard British stalled, turn 1 they failed to reach the table, so it took them at least four turns to advance. Artillery had landed on the right-hand hill, and rear hill, but had failed to kill anything, even with two 8 gun batteries of 25lbers . My ambush was sprung out the thicket. British infantry advancing developed an unfortunate habit of getting hit by mortars and HMGs. The British in turn 6 cleared the central hill with armour, but needed to get at least three infantry stand...
