Playing Black Powder with my 8 year-old!

Rach demanded a game...
She has been helping roll the dice during lockdown games, and wanted to try a 'harder' game (well, maybe a medium one Daddy)! Who was I to refuse? So I broke out two even-ish forces, 19th Division X Corps Prussians, and 4th Division, 1st Corps, French, plus a division of Dragoons.

So, before we watched 'Artemis Fowl' (it's not bad, just mucks up the beginning of the book, watch with low expectations and an open mind).

Rach chose the 'shooty army' - French. The odds were stacked against me, Rach had more troops, and she's 8!

Rach was assisted by her 'squishies', it's a barren, featureless plain out there!

She decided to get her guns up first, von Moltke would be proud, even if she was playing the French! Move, deploy, fire. I am so proud!

Almost immediately she decided artillery was a good thing shook and forced my Jagers and the Oldenbergers to retire, her Mitrilleuse vollied accurately, and the wonder weapon did jam, but needing a 6 to unjam on her next shot, that's EXACTLY what an 8 year-old will roll!! 😁
 

She held her cavalry in reserve too. Her trilleures retired from the Prussian guns, but soon returned.


They rallied and returned to flank my cavalry that were attacking the Zouaves, the cavalry fled.


With that, I had 3/6 shaken or broken compared to 2/5, who would get the next unit?
Inevitably - me! Well played Rach!

    Great story, haven't got my, just, eight year old playing historical yet just fantasy skirmish and X-Wing.

Black Powder 1870 Stats and Modifications

1870 Franco-Prussian Conflict in Black Powder Hi all, If you are reading this, it's because. like us, you are Black Powder fans and want to know how we manage the Franco-Prussian War. Anything below is by no way official, just the house rules we have developed over the last few years of playing. A few thoughts first: Fighting in the period is best described as hard fought assaults by Prussians, supported by superior artillery against superior but very strong defensive French lines. All ranges and movements are in cm scale, just to be awkward! All my forces are modelled on 3” square bases, apart from divisional commanders, skirmishers and artillery which have a frontage of 1½” and Corp commanders who are on a 2” base. Mortal Gods

Footsore recently released this rather fun game, based around 28mm skirmish fighting in ancient Greece. Tried it at Campaign, then got a set for my birthday from Manny and Rob at Boards and Swords . This month's batch of Mortal God's figures, some new, some old. Athenians - bought when the rules first came out in 2019, just after doing evveryone elses's stuff, I had lost the mojo to do these, plus my Thespians have been serving me well. But, with the great shed tidy, and continued popularity amoung my friends, it was about time. The Athenian set had lead heroes, and plastic hoplites/peripoli, but I decide that I can use any of my other hopilites to fill in for the citizens, and that actaully, I sould get on with the lead.
