Eeeeeeeoooowwww pew pew!
It's been years since I played X-Wing. Maybe even 5, but I asked the MK boys before Xmas, knowing that I would have one Thursday when my eldest daughter was not at archery during the Xmas holidays, and dusted off the box (literally) and did some maths, and 100 points of Rebels hit the table. We still all play 1st Edition, as it is a great game, especially when you stick to the earlier phases of ships before 'power creep' snuck in.
John used his TIE/In wing, including Baron Soontir Fel, and two Imperial Aces; and Alex, who has never played before, use a mix from the First Order/Resistance starter box including Two First Order Ties, Poe Dameron and BB-8 in an X-Wing, and an TIE Advanced to take him up to 100.
My list:
Wedge Antillies (9 Skill): X-Wing, with proton torps and an R2-F2 unit, plus a skill that I cannot remember but dropped the enemies dodge by one...
Tycho Celchu (8 Skill), A-Wing, Push the Limit and Guided Missiles.
Red Squadron X-Wing Pilot (4 Skill), Proton Torpedoes.
Setting up and first moves, I was bottom right, Alex top right and John middle left. John's mat is Deep Cut Studios.
John soon spotted that an A-Wing on fast approach, with Push The Limit and an ability to ignore stress, is going to be a pain, but my initial passing shot was unsuccessful, as John evaded the lot!
His return of fire from the Baron missed, but his Ace was somewhat more brutal, and there went my shields and half my hull!
My X-Wings close in on the action, somewhat slower, while Alex comes in in aline, Poe unleashing his torpedoes on one of John's Aces, to be finished off by the TIE/Advanced, and this was only turn 3! John, thought he might be home by 9.
*DINK* Not a good moment for an ace pilot to invalidate his no claims bonus, I misjudge the speed and bump a TIE/In before I could side-slip and avoid the embarrassment!
The fur ball intensifies, as Wedge draws a bead on his brother-in-law. However, the closing New Order TIE was a worry.
The Baron surgically removes Tycho from proceedings.
Wedge is hit!
One of the best pilots in the game sustains a nasty injury, making him about the worst pilot on the universe!
TIE/In and New Order duke it out.
Poe dinks into a squint, while the Baron laughs on.
There was a First Order TIE and Poe there a second ago. Despite being pilot 0, Wedge mullers the upstart crow!
Only to succumb himself to First Order fire.
This left John who had been in a losing position ready to take the game.
My Red Squadron pilot, after surviving many near misses, has the opportunity to take out an Imperial Ace, but what do you know, John pulls a truly magnificent set of save out the bag (both of these are straight rolls).
The last First Order TIE realises he has let the Baron get behind him (the Baron with double actions and free focus each turn was rather amazing).
BOOM!
One way to stop a TIE/In shooting you is force it to bump into you. However, the Baron knew what to do, and he sideslips in avoiding my Red Squadron pilot's fire arc.
Bang (or lack of, as this is a hard vacuum). The Imperials claim a fine victory. No ship was undamaged, and John made it to 10:05 with the victory!
Fabulous game, so glad John and Alex agreed to play, you know it's a good game when your ribs ache after playing through laughter.
If you've never seen this, please watch.
