First Game of Cruel Seas - Raid at Canaux de Sable

After a couple of weeks delay, John and I got a game of Cruel Seas in today.

John chose his rather beautiful Germans, and I chose to attack. He used 3 S100 class boats and an S38 (nearest). He had to escort a tanker across table. Channelled by a headland and shifting sands, his flotilla spread out to watch for incoming threats.

His fast boats move up with the tanker, carrying vital fuel oil to troops down the coast.

From behind the headland springs Algey with his Vospers MkII, which, sighting an opportunity, unleashes two eels into the brine.

Joined by Evans, who also puts two eels into the deep, between then, their fish will cover all possible angles that the tanker will be in (travelling at full speed at 15 knots, the rusty hulk could only decelerate and dodge via evasive manoeuvres). Algey and Evans deck guns also hose down the  tanker causing the crew to take cover as the wheel man is carried away for emergency care (crew hits need a skill check to see whether the next turn the crew can commit to any actions, and knock a full third of his hull points).

John threw in his S38 boat to point blank range, trying to hose down the Vospers with cannon fire. He missed, with every single gun!

Taylor sweeps in, gunning down the S38 and causing another crew hit, the elite of the German navy ducking away from a few shots.

Another S100 zooms into Algey's Vosper, peppering it with cannon fire (those quads are nasty, if they hit), there goes Algey's no claims!

Algey and crew, seeing that their plywood hull more full of holes than Algey's sanity, and scuttle off to their lifeboat, and slowly scull towards the nearest sandbank.

The crew of the tanker failed their skill test from the previous turn and keep their heads down, continuing to move forwards at full speed.

Thankfully, they missed their own S-Boat, by a matter of metres, leaving the S boats crew shouting and waving fists.

Algey and his crew watched on from their dingy as their eels slammed straight into the stricken tanker, one striking forward, the other amidships. Would they be duds?

Of course not, these are BRITISH torpedoes, two cracking thuds as both fish are live.

Hit one, 54 points of damage, It is very satisfying rolling 16D6 in one go!

I only needed 2 points needed to sink her. Think we might have achieved that. Her back broke and she settled by the keel.

Taylor also had his fish in the water, but they were not needed.

Taylor's rudder was crippled by accurate German shooting, he would only be turning left for a bit, could he clear the sandbanks? Other Vospers, realising that they were no longer needed, gunned their engines and headed out.

However, Taylor trying to clear his rudder before running into the sands, has to quieten his engines.

John, I'm sure, it trying to get all his boats into the same square cm!

I had two Vospers Mk1s that were acting as back stop behind the far sandbanks. They tried one shot at the S boats, and then decided they could retire now for tea and buns.

Taylor's hulk was hounded down and shot, he and his crew broke out the dingy and paddled off to the nearest beach to top up their tans.

With that, 4 of my Vospers out of 6 had escaped, but the tanker was on the bottom of the sea. Mission successful. Algey and Taylor's crews were picked up by the RAF later that day, and returned for tea and medals, dusted off and ready to go again.

The random miniatures in my lead pile thread

Hi all, As the months go on, I am finding more random stuff that does not fit into any catagory is creeping it's way up to the surface of my lead mountain. I decided a few years back, rather than just throw it back like one of Nobby's escaped socks, I would actually paint some of them.   Nemisis the Warlock - Khaos; Deadlock; the Warlock; the Shape of Things to Come; the Lord of the Flies; Holder of the Sword Sinister; The Death Bringer One of my all-time favourite 2000AD characters (2000AD is a British sci-fi based comic for those not from the fair shores of Blighty). "Creedo!" I got hold of two of these on Evil Bay, one uncommon (yellow base rim), one rare (red base rim), so I trashed the rare one (and kept the base elsewhere). This is a simple conversion of a heroclix figure,  Excessus, Sword Sinister replaced, base ripped off and new one sculpted, undercoated figure,  completly  repainted, flying stem attached. Sometimes, you just need a seri

Medieval Scots - A replacement army - second set of three spear units added

I  have, after much soul searching (no I could not find mine either), decided that I really should stretch my Pictish spearmen a whole 1000 years. 300ish to 1300 ish, so really stretching the whole Pict-morph-thing now. So 10mm to replace the fallen over the winter, this will be fun ( 18 months later, and summer is on the way and I finally started them ) This means a restart and finish with my Scots army back where I started with them for DBM, a successful army, but before MeG came out I had not touched them in 10 years, then I sold my 15mm version of them in 2014 (and then were instantly stolen from my late friend's car).  So, back to the 1300s version. 1315 to be exact. A project I've been putting off for years, but now I have started the Medieval Scots spearmen from c.1315 with Pendraken figures and flags . Got this lot finished just in time for this weekend's MeG tournement. More Scots spears and the generals Another 25
