Last game, and after that spectacular success, I was suddenly up on a respectable total of 31 and was playing David 'The War Doctor' Parish. An absolute gentleman and a huge laugh to play against.
Russians. An interesting list. No pike and shot, lots of shot with 2-handed-cut and crush, and Cossacks with skirmish abilities, plus some interesting cavalry.
His list, another biggy with a breakpoint of 7 and many more generals than I could muster! Eek!
The terrain fell again on the dense side, I went for heavy cavalry presence on the left wing, on the right my Cossack horse backed up two pike and shot units, while in the middle it was another case of could my foot survive the shooty onslaught that was on its way!
Hussars and Rayters, waiting for the off.
Amazing where you can end up with a yellow and green card! David had to react and react fast to this.
The Reytars and Panceri watch on from the safety of the rear.
Over on the right, my Cossacks in skirmish push forwards to try and slow the massive line of foot coming my way! Except I forgot skirmishers are ignored by formed when moving. Oh well, it was a nice idea.
Might as well enjoy the last game, David fired and retired, causing kills on the way. On the right, a Rayters smashed a foot unit in a turn. Things were on the up (2-0)
The Red Hussars suffered one kill, the blues on their second attempt had lost two bases, this was going to be close... David countered with his superior cavalry into my victorious Rayters (we made a mistake here, I should have pursued into David's Cavalry downfield, but no matter), who were instantly in trouble.
My other Rayters found an easier target as they hit David's foot.
So much for an easy win, after their best weekend ever, the Blue Hussars return to form and despite being on red, lose massively (2-2)!
Yup, that's a big hole, the Rayters also go, but at least we did some hit on the way down! (2-4)
Look at that gap. My Rayters burst through David's foot, all the way to the back edge. Command and control was all but gone now. (4-4) David's superior horse took a KAB skull on the way past, but they were so clear that they were not going to worry.
On the right, three of my units try to repeat their success against the Savoyards, but could lightning strike twice. Thankfully David had wandered into the flank zone, so was nervous and shooting down, plus shooting lower vs skirmishers.
The Red Hussars hit David's cavalry and on impact rolled Red White (Skull/wound, so shatter), then Red Green (another skull wound) followed by a final Red Green, and another skull wound. In one phase, the Hussars, after 6 games, have finally proved what they should have been doing all along! (6-4)
Well, that didn't last! David reacted, turned, and smashed me to pieces. (6-6), I brought my victorious Rayters back to counter, this was a huge mistake on my part, I should have turned right and taken the camp, instead, this just presented an easy target for David's cavalry horde and an easy set of points.
Meanwhile, in the firefight on the right, I was coming off worse overall, but there were a couple of juicy targets there.
The centre was feeling the pressure as David brought three units to fire on two. My left hand unit was blatantly on the edge.
The stupidity of a Denham, leaving my Rayter's hanging in the wind. Thankfully three black cards had scuppered David turning his foot to face the fast approaching Panceri.
As I lost my Rayers, the Panceri hit David's foot in the rear. Another swap of units! (8-8) Whatever happens here, we are going looking at to 15-10, or 10-15 or maybe, just maybe mutual destruction at 12-12!
"There is no overkill, there is only ceasefire and reload!" A mass charge on a brittle Russian unit would soon result in another break, but not yet.
My foot breaks under shooting, oh heck! 10-8 now!
Just could not kill them quick enough! (still 10-8).
The KAB as the unit breaks cause another Russian unit to go, it's all desperate. (12-10), Yes I know I can't get 12, but it's 5/6 plays of mine plays 6/7 lost of David's.
Everything that can moves to try to achieve the final kill.
But it is not enough, David engineers a flank charge on my Cossack foot. My shooting is not quite enough to break that last unit, chewing large lumps out of them. Oh dear!
And that is it, my foot Cossacks break. 10-15. Hell of a game, great fun.
What could I have improved? Go after the camp next time Will, the Rayters would have lived, David would have taken KABs everywhere. Ho hum. That's life!
Brilliant weekend, four great games against superb opponents, all good humoured and trying the new rules that are shaping up nicely, and most importantly, David won overall by 4 points, and I came second and got a Certificate! So happy! :D
