Cracking game vs Paul and his Vandals tonight. Our last game before Warfare at the weekend, and Paul's only chance to try out his list before kick off!
Paul chose to attack, and I forced the terrain out to 'Very Dense Coastal', however, my plan to close out the center fell short, despite 7 pieces of terrain between us!
Paul is a very aggressive player, so giving him manouver space was never going to end well. My plan was to pin with my cavalry, advance my auxilia through the town into a supporting position, and unleash my legions.
Paul's was to drag me out into 'Chaos Theory', where his higher manouverability and impact factors would tell in his favour.
I did out scout him by 10% though!
Deployment. Everything of Paul's is on horseback!
My cards were bobbins! If I either of my two flank commands had been allies they would have deserted then and there!
A cautious shuffle forwards, Paul come pelting in.
We rejoin the action a few turns later, as my catafracts, who always die, sell themselves dearly by offing one of Paul's units, and my superior cavalry accounts for a second (4-0).
On the other flank, the forces deploy to crash head on.
Paul's barrage of skilled shooting light horse starting to take effect on the left, as the Vandal knights start to pick their targets.
A second unit crashes into the catafracts. This would not end well for them. My cats usually die but today they fought well, before dieing, again!
Paul pulls apart my cavalry command. The catafracts burst through one unit and hit another (4-0)
The Cats die (4-2) and my average cavalry meets Paul's already damaged lancers, but backed up by my guard foot, Paul was not going to last long!
Blurry shot of the general mess! My infantry line holds firm.
Sorry, did you have a unit there? Both of us exchange losses (6-4)
In the distance, my third cavalry unit dies (6 all)
Leave it to the legions to do the hard fighting! Well, actually, my superior auxilia do most of the hard work from here!
My cavalry manages a flank charge, but dies to Paul charging them in the back.
My guards block for the cavalry as it tries to find a juicy target!
Cavalry units swapped again (8-6), but to the right Paul loses another cavalry, as my Auxilia shatter under the weight of horse flesh, and my army decides it's time to leave!
Well, it was a good 2 1/2 hour game this one. Both of us had to really think hard to get our forces to work. I feel sorry for anyone who has top face Paul at the weekend, I've a feeling he will do very well! 15-8 to Paul, another great game.
