Hellenistic Spartan commision - 15mm Hellenistic Greek or Macedonian successors

Following on from seeing the successful Spartan commission, Roger, whom I did the Cathars for, asked me to do a Helleistic Spartan force in 15mm Xyston (that will also double as Ptolemaic and Asiatic or other Alexandrian successor state), and spears from Museum Miniatures Range 'Z'.

Pike unit 1 (the guard) and three units of spear armed hoplites plus generals to finish of this commission.

The no 1 pikes

Simple, but heavy

Perfect ranks, unlike 8 & 9!

Spears 1

It's a big mass

I do like the way they rank up

Spears 2 - marines?

Had to pick the sheilds nicely

Off they go

Charge!

Spears 3 - Spartan spears

I REALLY REALLY love this shot!

Mean and moody

More nudity than...

Just so you can see the back and shields

Big mass

There are at least 9 units of pikes to do, plus a lot of extras, so I started with the middle units of his army list, pike blocks 4, 5, 6, & 7, now I've moved onto 2,3, 8 &9

Roger will do his own basing, later.

Units 2,3 and 8 & 9 finished.
2 and 3 are decent elite units, 8 band 9 are freed or armed slaves, which is never the best idea for well drilled troops, more on that later.

2 and 3

Serried ranks

Nice and regular

Looking impressive

Back view showing uniforms being nice and regular

Units 8 & 9

Yes, they are that disorganised

Poor rating? Why am I even asking!

Pikes all-a-tangle

If you look carefully, some are even facing the wrong way

Good luck standing behind them!

Not good at all

Unit 4 a regular unit

Shields all the same, nice and regular like

Side on

Back view

Off they go

Unit 5 - slightly less regular shields and irregular piping on the armour

They're going to, who knows where?

Side on

Back view to show the piping

Unit 6 - 50% regular shields

Looking pretty fine

Advancing

Mixed piping and much lower quality armour

They're going too... to Blackpool!

Unit 7 - really mixed shields, bad armour and bad drill and a few ex-slaves

Whatever shield they could find really...

Just about a unit

The whole batch of 128(k),

They look like a real taxis here;

So many they fill my lightbox and spill over!

Soldiers of Napoleon - French Imperial Guard vs Austrians - bad day to be a hussar.

Whilst down in Wiltshire for the Devizes comp, Nigel very kindly gifted me his 10mm Imperial Guard division from FOGN (Field of Glory Napoleonics), and although I had rebased the cavalry and generals (including painting some), the guard themselves were not finished. I scrabbled together a 900 Soldiers of Napoleon list (which turns out to be illegal, read the rules Will), and fielded it Vs Mark's undefeated Austrians. My army, including reserves, was twelve units and Mark could basically do that in two brigades! My list : Two brigades of two five Old Guard infantry, with two twelve pounders and full cassions. Guards Heavy cavalry brigade. Five Grenadiers a Chevel. Five Guards Dragoons. Three batteries of 8lber guns. Guards light cavalry brigade. Four Guards lancers, four Guards Chasseurs a Chevel. Three batteries of three 8lber guns. Mark had: An Avent Guard brigade with hussars, artillery, jagers and two infantry units, two dragoons with horse artillery as his cavalry brigade,An in...
