Mort at Leighton Buzzard Wargames Club kindly invited me to try A Very British Civil War, using 28mm and 'One Hour Skirmish Wargames'.
Two games, two losses later, but it was top fun!
Game one:
A raid on Mort's Anglian League as they try to restart a broken down lorry full of contraband. His men think themselves safe from the local, but a new gang is in town...
The terrain. I think Mort was rather taken with the idea of a playground in the action.
My view, plenty of cover to approach the lorry from.
Mort's boss and team attempt to restart the lorry (three picture cards from his deck needed on separate activation). Part of his gang lines the long hedge on the bend, the rest try out the see-saw!
My (substantially) smaller gang sets up. My figures did not arrive until the following day, so I borrowed these fine fellows from Mort's really impressive collection.
L-R - Polly (SMG, Femme fatal, tough; Tommy - Leader 3, sure shot, street fighter 3, rifleman, LMG, prone rifleman, Paul (sure shot pistol), SMG gunner, Arthur (looking a little American, SMG, Leadership 1, Street fighter 3) and another rifleman.
Not much by the way of range, but a hell of a lot of close combat capability.
Initial moves, my LMG immediately downs a driver!
Higher the card, the more difficult to stop the shot or more activation points. This was a good shot!
But my LMG is downed by a rifle shot in return. He would be down until a Joker is pulled from the pack, red cards are dead, black is back!
After one of Mort's characters tries to throw a grenade at him, Arthur gets a little, tiny bit upset, and rushes forwards into close combat, the resulting bad language was rather impressive, and I am pretty sure that did more damage than his 6 close combat cards!! The playground accounted for 6 characters in all. The swings will need a lot of cleaning!
My SMG gunner is downed for a second time in the game! The dial shows Mort has had one successful attempt at starting the lorry, but Arthur has been downed! The other driver has also been disabled.
Unfortunately, I rather over extended myself, which allowed Mort to finish Arthur off, and his Femme fatale attempted to start the lorry.
John attempts to rescue his big brother, this isn't going to go well, caught in the open, his save cards will not be good.
However, I pulled a joker. End of turn, and we tested for breaking. Mort would fail on a 5 on one card as he had taken a fair few casualties, we worked out what I needed (the lowest card, I'm in pretty good shape), I was only one one card too as Arthur and Tommy were both down.
Mort pulled a 5, and broke, Mort uttered the immortal words "You need anything but an Ace."

ACE! Mutual break! Hilarious.
Game 2:
Mort's Anglican League are attempting to gather 'taxes; from a local farmstead. His lorries were parked on the village green.
Local kids playing in the rec while tax collectors are harangued by the local womenfolk. Dad 'watches' the kids from behind the Leighton Buzzard Observer.
This was definitely not my game, as hilariously it was all over in 30 minutes, including 15 minutes to reset. I could not save a thing. My only chance came with Polly getting a lorry started! But it was all over so quickly!!
Two hilarious games, loved both, will definitely play this again. Thank you Mort.

"Arthur, we will be back, and we will take these lousy yokels apart!"

Very nice Will, a RPG quality to the narrative ... love the swings in the park!
