Seven months into 2019, and how do I now view my wargames world?
In no particular order:
1) Shows.
I ended up at Salute at short notice, helping Timecast, to beyond our stall front, I saw 5 minutes of the show, which is how long it took me to find the Karzai. Saw a lot of old friends, and beyond that, can't really comment beyond that. Campaign was good, quiet, but good. I will do Warfare in November, to play MeG and buy the girls Xmas pressie to me, beyond that, not really bovered! Why? Shows used to be great, but now I know what I want, and where to get it, it's not my favourite thing, dodging rucksack (and the new double threat of rolled up terrain mats) and looking at 28mm cowboy vampire games that I'll never really be into.
B) Games
These took a knock due to my eldest having an archery course on Thursday night's for a month and a bit, but she's completed that now, and I'm back on course. Paul &I have found Leighton Buzzard club also meet on Wednesday, and its walking distance (and opposite one of the best pubs in town) but I still prefer MKWS, and on top.of this, Andy has his own table in Thame, which is cool, but weekend time is limited.
MEG still dominates my playing time, with many reports on here, some amazing victories, close draws and horrendous losses. Club games have been fun, but conpetitions have weighed heavy on my mind.
Of the competitions I've been to, Brighton et Gloriam was great, Out The Dark Ages went amazingly well, coming in 4th with an army that should not have performed. Derventio II, which I was running, was a hoot. Borrowed Dacians worked really well. Rollcall was miraculous. Could not believe it as I got 3rd, top places Samurai player. Campaign was a laugh, but my army was awful, should have borrowed one, but using Shaun the Sheep as your general us too good to pass up. Skullrollers, I forgot to have fun about half way through game 3 and it carried on into game 4. Idiot. Thankfully, Ian gave me a fabulous game six, and I stopped being a stroppy knob.
This was the reason I stopped playing Flames, I was taking things WAY to seriously, and I just need to relax and play. A small taste of success is not good, I should stick to being useless.
Competitions upcoming include The Time of Inadequate Lighting in Derby in October, which I'm running, Kings int'North early November then Warfare
mid November (chariot period, must finish my Mitanni), after that, its nice and quiet. I don't do Devises or Britcon due to family events (Jo loves me, but wargaming on my wedding anniversary might be considered a BAD idea).
Other games:
This year, I have tried to branch out a bit more, so games I have played since my last thoughts post:
Star Trek: Ascendancy. Good rules, lots of fun, no idea how to win.
Naval Thunder. Four games in a night last week, and expect more ships on the painting blog soon (although I'm not sure whether I'll ever use HMS Lion that I got sent instead of Hood).
Sabresquadron. Not played enough as Nick has a new job, and I've been busy, so we need a longer term plan, but our one game was AWESOME!
Cruel Seas: only one game, but fleet is painted, bolstered, boosted and ready to go, hopefully week after next will see a scrap, or not.
Poseidon's Warriors. One fine game, again, more needed, please.
Black Powder. One cracking game with an imagination scenario, another due this week, just need to firm up the plot (It may involve a race to a crossroads). 1864 Prussians are underway, pretty sure the Danes will follow soon. 1870 Prussians and French about to recommence painting after a 4 year lay off.
Warband. One game played, definitely need more, but John is about to go off on holidays, so will have to wait.
Star Wars: Destiny. A dice game vs Imi, actually we've both enjoyed this, she is rebuilding her deck to include Jen Urso!
King of Tokyo, whole family likes this.
Frostgrave. 28mm fantasy skirmish, not my thing, well, actually, it is. Two games vs Chris, Having Jacinta and her Goblins its a great laugh, and they are doing well (even if she keeps getting offer in combat)
Last Days: Zombie Apocalypse. Another 28mm skirmish game, which features zombies. Really thought it would not be my thing, as it has zombies, but I had figures, and Chris wanted to try it Four games played. This has caught me by surprise, but I have absolutely loved it, to the point of buying figures, including zombies, and terrain for it. Love the narrative and feel of the rules. Must get the new suppliment.
What I haven't played yet but want to (only 26 years to retirement):
Star Wars - any, but especially Armada. Imperial Skies- two capital ships to be done. Sabresquadron- must find a willing victim. Blucher- really fancy this again.
Painting: 1100 figures finished, this feels alow compared to previoys years, but Rays rebasing was worth taking time over. I also have Pete's Samurai that has 200 painted but not counted figures, waiting to have transfers on their back banners. After that, I have dealt with three big new commissions and two continuing ones, plus 4 much smaller fun commissions that have all added to the count nicely. It's roughly 50/50 between my stuff and other people's.
I've made an effort to clear a few back-log projects, inspired by seeing others, including my own 10mms, it's very cathartic.
Future plans.
Finish the Samurai, paint Roger's Cathers, paint the figures that arrived today and finish Graham's hunnic horde. I have a trip to Le Mans this month, so an 1870 catch up seams apt. I want to get the 1864 playable next too. That means Danes. Ivenhad these Danes for years. Must start...
However, what I actually have planned for the secind half of the year is... very little. One MeG army to finish, practise needed for the three comps upcoming, but not too much, as I need to teach myself to have fun, again.
North Koreans need painting, they are staring at me, accusingly.
28mm Jacobite Scots need finishing to, just... tarten *shudders*. ;)
The next big MeG project for me will be Hausa. Not an all conquering MeG army, but it was the area my Granddad was a District Commissioner in charge of their traditional homeland Northern Nigeria, and he faced a cavalry charge (Well, it was ceremonial and he claimed he was scared, but he was a fabulous raconteur), he described the armoured cavalry vividly, and while this will involve converting a Forged In Battle Arab 15mm Kickstarter, (I know, me, painting 15mm for my own pleasure, weird) that Bill has very kindly gifted me, to look more veiled. I want to add more WW2 naval, both for Naval Thunder and Cruel Seas (still want to do the late Dunstan Curtis justice).
This is always an expensive position to be in, as this is when projects/ideas sneak up on you. If I can keep dealing with previous random purchases, I will be happy, it's all good.
