Mortal Gods:Mythic - Cursed Host of Hera vs Thuderous Host of Zeus

Thea sat in the shade on the Stereobate of the temple steps, flicking olive pips towards the Peribolos. As a champion of Hera, she knew she was pushing the limits of decorum, but after today, everything did. Her helm rested between her feet anf her shield was propped agsinst a pillar. She was tired. Exhausted, the heat was unbearable. She looked across at X, the Pristess of Hera, who was scratching her lion behind his ears and shrugged. The priestess smiled wainly in return.
"Hera is pleased with us, we did well. Rest all "
Hastrodeme, the leader of the temple guards, finished sharpening her sword on a whetstone "That nick is never coming out, I might have to go to the temple of Hephestus later and get this reforged".
"Well, we all certainly put our equipment to good use today," Thea added, another stone pinged outwards.

Mark And I met up for a game of Mortal Gods: Mythic. I have been building up forces for Hera for a while, and now was time to use them. Mark was using his Zeus forces, but this time he was using Satyrs and a cyclops instead of the centaurs I was expecting from him.
On the left, my harpies hid, waiting to go.

On the right, the three Gorgons, Medusa, Euryale and Stheno, held the flank. But, in the distance, the cyclops lurked between a unit of satyrs and hoplites.

On the hill stood Mark's priest and hero, both armed with Zeus's thunderbolts, utterly dangerous and a battle winner if you get in range. To their outside, Dionysus the Satyr General and more saytrs held the far edge.
I had considered a bigger, weaker, force, but I had only just finished them, so reslly 'needed' to use the Gorgons!

Everyone advances apart from the lion. No worries, he gets two activations a turn and extra speed, I'm sure he will catch up.

On the right, Stheno charges a unit of Saytrs, killing one.

Knew I shouldn't have given Mark that Cyclops from Brian's collection. He's a big boy and hits hard. Supporting Saytr archers move up towards the ruins behind him.

The saytr archers try a cheeky shot at X, but she has Hera on her side and dodges as the arrows ping off the ruins..

Euryale piles into towards Mark's hoplites. Not a bad roll from Medusa to recover from Mark's priestly thunderbolts. X has this useful skill, one unit in line of sight recovers wounds equal to hits on courage dice.

However, a cyclops will cause you a lot of damage if it catches you! Poor Euryale. Good thing she is immortal, as this finished hermoff glfor this game (she us a Companion, so doesnt get the heroes recivery chance roll). To the right, the general Dionysus had also charged Stheno, causing a wound.

Mark's run of hot dice continued as his priest launched a thunderbolt that smashed through Stheno. Damn him! I'm now down 160 odd points already! Ouch. It's only turn 2. 😎

Even more ouch when my harpies failed their charge and ended up in the open, which allowed Mark's left-hand saytr archers to pick them off in one shot. You know what I was saying about his hot run on the dice?

Whereas, Medusa, with an extra die for being at point blank to the cyclops with her bow, and an extra atrack die for an in play omen effect, rolls brilliantly for hits, but fails to convert any wounds!

The good news is, despite Mark pulling two omen tokens (red pebbles on the hilltop), the turn continues. Dionysus tries to charge the unaccompanied Medusa, but all he catches is Medusa's gaze and is turned into a rather attractive garden ornament!

Mark's hero had come off the hill after expending his thunderbolt, and watched on as the lion attempted to hurt Zeus's temple guard hoplites.

Hastrodeme had led one successful charge with her temple guard on saytrs, but had been pushed back by Mark's second hoplite stand. The counter charge saw her guard tripping over her own sandal laces! Failed charge! Dratdratdoubledratandblast!
(Yes, her unit stand does include Thea's guinea pig riding pixie, because, why not?!?)

Thea was secretly holding the 'Apple of Discord', which, when thrown at an opponent, jas the effect of if you hit itelveses the target to attack themselves. The apple bounced off the cyclops head, and he immediately set about beating himself up. He only had three wounds left out of his starting ten! Medusa could now finish him with her bow, especially as she gets to shoot if charged, she can sit back and pepper any opponent with arrows.
Medusa caused many hits on the wounded cyclops, but again the gods were fickle, and she was using rubber tipped arrows! At this point, it was tempting to leg it!

Especially when Hastrodeme and the temple guards failed to charge again, and lost a hoplite to Mark's hoplites. Thea was also embarrassed as she 'rushed' to assist and found her sandals tied together!
So, excuses lined up, like any good wargamer. Take your pick from:
Mark's dice were unbeatable.
Mark's priest is way too poweful
My dice were awful.
My tactics were wrong.
It was the first time I used this army, so was bound to loose.
Freshly painted figures, sobbound to loose.
I had used a badly balanced list, and should have bought more, cheaper inits..
I kept failing charges

However, Hera is a vengeful god and does not like to be slighted, especially by her husband and definitely not his followers. She had other plans for this game.
And it all went a bit quick, so I forgot to take any more photos here, oops!
Firstly, X was healing with her ability, and Medusa was having wounds restored faster than the cyclops could cause hits.
The cyclops then charged Medusa again, locking his eye on hers, and as he looked her in the eye (bit of an odd phrase for a cyclops, but you get the idea), and was immediately turned to stone! That's 100 points of garden gnome!
Medusa still had an activation, and slithered round the hill to close range of the Priest of Zeus, who had struck down Stheno and had hit her at least twice with thunderbolts. So, she dealt him a taste of his own medicine, and slammed four arrows into his frail old body.
With the loss of his priest, who acted as promachos for his force, Mark's forces broke. Dead promachos= game over
I had lost 194 points, Mark has lost 202! As Pyrrhic a win as you can get!
Good thing is apart from Medusa, Gorgons are immortal, so will be back.

That is one great thing about these rules, one side can utterly dominate, but the Gods are fickle and suddenly it swings completely the other way!
We play again this week, I may alter the force slightly, but it is great fun to play with and if I keep it is, hopefully I will learn to use what I have. Such as my hounds, which are are cool, and cheap!

Hastrodeme looked over at Thea. Both were battered but still alive, and Hera was victorious. Thea passed a flaggon of wine over to her and X.
"It was worth it." X smiled, "Teach Zeus to leave a knife in the fork draw again!"
"You sssssssshhhharing those drinkssssssss." From out of the temple shadows, Medusa's hand reached out...

Black Powder 1870 Stats and Modifications

1870 Franco-Prussian Conflict in Black Powder Hi all, If you are reading this, it's because. like us, you are Black Powder fans and want to know how we manage the Franco-Prussian War. Anything below is by no way official, just the house rules we have developed over the last few years of playing. A few thoughts first: Fighting in the period is best described as hard fought assaults by Prussians, supported by superior artillery against superior but very strong defensive French lines. All ranges and movements are in cm scale, just to be awkward! All my forces are modelled on 3” square bases, apart from divisional commanders, skirmishers and artillery which have a frontage of 1½” and Corp commanders who are on a 2” base. Feel free to ignore that. My units are regiments of infantry,   brigades of cavalry and skirmish squadrons of cav. Artillery is either battalion as one gun, or a battery of two guns on a base, horse artillery have limbers attached. Army composition...
