Warhammer Old World: High Elves (Melniboneans) vs Chaos Undivided

Matt and I had agreed to play Old World. Good old fashioned dice throwing bloodbath.

Despite going to the club for five years, this is the first time we actually got to have a game against each other, as our interests don't often overlap. Matt is a lovely bloke and I knew this would be a cracking game.
My High Elves (dating back to the 80s, almost older than Matt), vs his  beautifully painted Chaos horde at 1500 points. Mort sat in to help guide us through the increasingly labyrinthine rules.
We deployed in a pitched battle. Seven units each by pure fluke. My plan was to pin down the right flank with shadow warriors and reaver cavalry (both shooty types), shot the units approaching to pieces, and then left the elite Swordmasters, and the General Elric, do the slicy-dicey thing they do so well. The main thrust was to be my Silver Helm cavalry who were to ride down teh chaos knights the out-numbered 2:1 and let them loose in the backfield.
Great plan huh!
Matt had two chariots, two units of hard warriors, five chaos knights, and two units of chaos hounds (ablative cover). His Chariots would go wide around the graveyard, his warriors, protected by dogs, would come straight down the middle, while his knights (also protected by ablative hounds) were on the other flank.

Matt discovers that my two scout units can deploy anywhere outside of 12" of him, including his side of the table! The finger points to where a unit of chaos hounds was shot away in one volley! Yay, points to the Elves already! 😎
However, my Silver Helm Cavalry, despite all the whistles, bells, characters and two magic standards, charge in, and...
Spectacularly fails to cause any hits on the chaos knights! The knights of the Dark Gods promptly mince two of the 1980s vintage elves!

Then in their turn, causes five more Chaos kills to kills to none, forcing the Elves back (after a morale a reroll for the standards). Thankfully, his knights must have slipped on the pool of gore left behind and did not catch mine!

The Reavers pounce on the chaos warriors back with a rear charge, and also miss! Four wound chances, four ones! At this point, my wound roll was averaging 1.3/6...
The chaos knights promptly turned round and swatted down 10 Reavers in two turns!

On Elf Hill, despite my mage melting a magical standard, then causing a nasty magical vortex that hit both warrior units...
Me: I'll target the one with the horns.
Matt: With my army, that's not really helpful!
Even beng supported by two shot of volley fire from my blot thrower and two rounds of archers shooting, I could not hit a barn door.
The Chaos warriors get in relatively unscathed. My Swordmasters even failed a charge to get in first on their second unit. My luck was really going well.
The bolt shooter crew killed the doggies in combat, but my archers were half wiped out in a turn by Matt's Chaos lord and friends.

Then one of his chariots ran over my mage and polished off the archers! Ouchies! Maybe I should have taken a spear unit instead?

On the plus side, before Matt's charging Chaos warriors can do any damage, Elric and the Swordmasters demolish the unit and total Matt's mage. Arioch smiled. These new fangled gods are no match for the real lords of Chaos.

Then it all really heated up, and I forgot to take photos. Eventually, Elwing and the Silverhelms remainders charged back in, wiping out the chaos knights (which they should have done turn 1)! Matt's General struck Elric down in a duel (I did cause him three woulds, sooooooo close). The Swordmasters didn't care, they never liked him much anyway, too sulky and introspective. With the aid of the returning Elwing, Matt's general and Warriors unit was cut down, as was my remaining Silverhelm. His general broke, to be speared in the back by Elwing's lance on pursuit. At the end of turn 6. all that remained of Matt was two chariots (one on one wound left), I had my Shadow Warriors, Elwing and the standard bearer from the Swordmasters!

Utterly brutal but great game. Huge laughs and felt like a real swinger of a game. Definitely a wobbly bottom lip moment turn 1&2, but much better ending

I lost 1280 ish points, Matt lost 1420. An absolute bloodbath. A great game and Matt was very keen to have a rematch soon.

Maybe Big Jason and the Gobbos will try their luck?

  1. That looks like a lot of fun. I always thought Melnibone would be the Dark Elves. I remember those models and have some of similar age.

Warhammer Old World - Goblins vs Empire, Batlle of The Hilly Hill

"Oi, where's the rest of the army?" Stumpy Jason turned round to the musician Thumpy Jason. "We's only playing 1000 points!" "Oh right. But why are there more Empire 'ooomans than us then?" the Goblin Wolfrider capatin pondered. Mort and I met up for a game of Warhammer Old World. I chose my Goblins, with only 1000 points. This led to me taking a unit of spears, with the army standard, a unit of archers, a spear chucker and some wolf riders. A level 1 mage, my general on a giant squig and Stumpy Jason rounded out my selection. I was tooled up with magic standards and characters, so half my points were tied up in characters. Mort had two units of mounted pistolliers, a spear unit, two detachments , one of handgunners, one of halbardiers, and a small unit of knights. Two characters were embedded in his spears and one pistolliers, and a mage strode forwards with the halbardiers. My wolves and general went left, archers, spears, bolt chucker and...

Mortal Gods - Three Sided scrap - finding the treasure.

Typhon woke up, his head was banging, and there would definitely be a new scar on hi sarm... "Nice to see you can take a knock too!" Leandros looked over at the archer. Polykratos sat on a nearby boulder, helmet and shield at his feet, sword bloodied, he was smiling at his two fellow fighters. "Nice to see you two sleepy heads. By the way, we won! Spartans and Etruscans all sent packing, treasures secrured!" Dave, David and I met up for a game of Mortal Gods. Mark was meant to be joining us, but he had to call off. This is only a quick report, as we were haing too much of a laugh! Six objecties were scattered across the field, which you have to find and hold until the end of turn 5. One would go live on a roll of '6', if an action was expended on it. The others then are empty. Three sides means two corners and an edge. 450 points each. I was nearest, Dave the other corned, David the opposite edge.My standard warband took to the field, with their eyes firmly...
