The random thoughts of Chairman Meow 2019.

Another year of toy soldiers has dawned, and slightly belated, it is time for some introspective navel/naval gazing about my hobby and what I plan to do with it this year.

No clue!

So, what do I know:
Rules I'm loving and playing most:

I have about MeG tournaments over the year, kicking off at Brighton at the end of this month. Several I know exactly what armies I am using, others I have no clue.
Brighton, Classical(Jan): Mid Republican Romans, solid, fun list, could go well.
Stockport, Medieval (Feb): Medieval - Early Scots or Tudors, both hopeless, one ready, other needs 4 units buying and painting...
Derby, Classical Open(March): Probably Sassanids or Imperial Romans, both do me well.
Rollcall, Eastern theme(April): Samurai. My go to army, and an eastern pool, looking forward to this one.
Campaign, Themed teams (May
): I'm in the retreat of empire pool, most likely Sassanids, or Picts, nope, Sassanids!
Skullrollers(June): Open comp, will probably use Samurai again.
Other comps TBC
Rollcall, Biblical (Nov): Mitanni, 3 units left to finish, and a camp. Been loving this army vs Andy & Mark
Will I be painting any more, not a clue. Nothing jumps out at the moment. Few units here and there, but no army plans at the moment.
Well, maybe Sassanids or Dacians or Greeks...

Sabresquadron: Loving these rules now, never have a bad game. Painting: just about to finish my 1980s Brits, next up is Korean War North Koreans as a laugh. Might have to buy a suitable opponent for them.

Other rules that are brimming under.

Frostgrave: First game postponed, watch this space. Will add more monsters soon, where did I put that wraith!

Cruel Seas, have enough to go, might need an MTG (or two), and some more E boats...

Poseidon's Warriors: Need more games, and maybe a Syracusian fleet.

Possible games:
Gangs of Rome: Love my first game, but definitely need terrain.

Street Wars: NY: Need terrain and to play.
Both 28mm, so storage of terrain might be an issue.

Imperial Skies: Need more games. Two ships to assemble and paint.

Navel Thunder: more games needed too,  definitely need more ships.

Games on the horizon:
Renatio et Gloriam, love them, must finish my Polish infantry.

  1. Have you tried To the Strongest. It's a set of Ancients rules. Nice and easy to play. There is a comp at Cranfield. Pop over and have a look if you get time. Always a pleasure to see you my friend. Don't forget to keep the Black dog in its cage

    1. I will certainly pop over and have a look, they sound fun. Hugs.

  2. Sounds like you have as much idea for the coming year as I do! Whatever you do, have fun.

    1. A mate just mentioned 28mm ECW... just found an army unpainted in the garage!

And a couple of 1980s and 1990s Demons that are being repurposed for Frostgrave.
Minor Demon - 'slottabase' removed and rebased.

Major Demon (or Balrog - as it says on the base, a present from my Step-Granny in about 1988)

To scale with a 32mm Frostgrave undead.

More treasures, and a skeletal rat that had escaped basing!

An extra wand that I lost from the original batch!

Finally got round to painting my

Sabresquadron - Falklands - Battle For Mount Cardin

A fictional Falklands Fight.
Last night's Sabresquadron game. Playing the rules author, Nick. All figures are painted by me from Pendraken's British and Argentines ranges.  Rock outcrops, Roads and Rivers by Timecast, with additional hills and boulders from Products From Wargames, mat by Lotz, photos by Nick.

Bit close that one!
Photos are rare and patchy due to the embedded photographer being under fire (and my phone camera being broken, so Nick had to take some hasty phone snaps)

Argentine Brief
Capitán Pablo Alonso
The British have landed, but not without loss. A carrier and two of their landing craft are sitting at the bottom of the South Atlantic, and their landings are not going well.
After their initial attempt at breaching our defenses and a failed thrust inland, many of our counterattacks have penned them in. Now is our opportunity to strike a blow against the imperialists.

As of this morning, a British mortar platoon has been cut off from their lines. You have …

10mm AWI forces, Brunswickers expanded.

Painted for the Pendraken painting competition, and to supplement my long neglected AWI forces, Brunswickers,
The aim has always been to play Black Powder with these, originally back in 2011, three of us started the project, one emigrated to the US then moved Bristol (Hi Brian), one never got started (Hi John) so after a few fights with Americans on both sides (often supported by Brian's French), I ended up building forces for both sides of Freeman's Farm from the Black Powder rules by Warlord Games.

With this next batch, it finishes all the forces needed for Freeman's Farm, only taken 7 years!
Grenadier Battalion von Breymann

Note the cords on the mitres helmets, those are sculpted on!

Light Infantry Battalion von Barner

Middle base is a recycled base, hence the different layout.

Friedrich, Baron von Riedesel,

The four missing figures!
Not sure how they escaped, but they're finished now!!!

And some more are now added, still trying to get the forces for 'Freeman&#…
